In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products

How does the Media Product represent a particular social group?

How does the Media Product represent a particular social group?

When researching magazines and what kind of magazine i wanted to do, I came across a couple of magazines that gave me ideas and I wanted to appeal to the demographic that I had chosen which were 16 -24 year old that enjoyed rock music and so I had to have that obvious throughout my magazine pages

I came across the band PVRIS on the cover of the rock magazine,Kerrang with determined stare at the camera, liking the whole aspect of the photo but since my artist was solo, it wouldn't be possible to do the exact same thing as with the mise-en-scene of the skull was relevant to their band, the people with in the rock genre could have varied clothing depending if they did soft rock (Indie Rock) or Heavy Rock (Metal) and so with Tomos, I put him leaning to the side of Soft Rock as I gave him a grey t-shirt and black jacket but with the style of his hair in a quiff, it was more indie that rock, with the appearance of a scraggly beard,it gave him more sense as a rocker, uncaring about his appearance but below his shoulder, he is wearing black jean trousers and black converses. The image appealing to the those of the uncaring rockers who don't think about their appearance.
The dominating red of the colour scheme on the the front cover mimics the use of white and purple on Kerrang's front cover

The image on my contents page isn't as stupid or as reckless as the one inside Kerrang's but I wanted to have Tomos as bit of a goofball and not always a serious rocker and so with the inclusion of this photo I hopefully represented that within the page, I also took inspiration from this contents page by having an editor's note and by having the yellow background to make the black text bolder when showing the reader what segments of the article it is but by having no sub-imagery with in the contents page, it doesn't gage the readers quite as much as I wanted to.

The story of the article would appeal to the target audience as it all about an unknown future and what it foretells, relating to the reader that are in the middle of education or have just gotten out of it, worrying about what they will do for the future and with the audience being lovers of the rock genre,it represents them by having a relatable celebrity have an uncertain feeling of whether he wants to continue being famous and going back to normal as though he was like them only in different circumstances

Who would be the audience for your Media Product?

How did you attract/address your audience?

I Predict A RIOT!!!!

(Kicker)

Growing up with a family of seven in Crickhowell, playing music among other things were ways to escape the madness of having such a large family, Tomos Jones gave us the chance to explore his background and where he is today.

During a rather cold day in March with the leaves barely on the tree, meeting him at his requested location seem like a rather interesting way to talk, arriving at the Melville Centre was a change of scenery  from recording studios, cafés and the occasional pub, but there he was, sat down on the cobble steps leading up to the Centre, wearing informal clothing, jeans, leather jacket and a t-shirt underneath and his quiff slightly hanging down over his eyes, it just seemed that he was attuned with this building, after heading inside and him making coffee, he gave a quick history lesson

“This used to be a school or more specifically a grammar school” His tone engaging but never dreary “But then it was converted then in a theatre used by amateur actors along with semi-professional music but that was rare, especially when they had to pay just to keep it open because of cuts… ”

After finishing the lesson and a quick minute of sorting out his hair so that it was no longer in his eyes, a grin appeared shortly after realising how long he took, he soon went on about how he had gotten into the music business

“The reason I know so much about this building is because, ‘surprise’, I used to act here” he chuckled with a boyish laugh that could make anyone smile

“For quite a while actually along with being in a band which published an EP but that didn’t go anywhere as everyone spilt to go to ‘Uni’ … but in some productions for the theatre group, they asked for my music ‘instinct’ and so obliged “ Fond memory flowing through his mind as the grin changes to a toothy smile

“But for those wondering of my inspiration for my music, the simple answer would be video games along with other artists, of course”

He said rather bluntly, knowing that most people wouldn’t know “My first album ‘The Final Few’ were inspired by Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us and my new album ‘Legion’ inspired by a Blizzard game “ he shook as his head knowing that it was stupid to produce music inspired by video game but this is his second album, with ‘The Final Few’ selling more than half a million in the first week, being successful for a rather unknown artist, which had skyrocketed his career was his song ‘Defiant Hound ‘ yet again inspired by the company who created The Last of Us

“It was a hobby to begin with, I SWEAR!” he holds his hands up to have an emphasis “I had no intent to become famous and especially be crowned ‘The Champion of Rock’” shaking his head at such a ridicules title in his mind

“Additionally with having the most common surname in Wales and practically the same name as the most famous Welsh singer” not giving any hints, he eyes showing his annoyance that he has the same name as Tom Jones but still with a smile

“But that is why I go by just Tomos so I am not confused with him, no bad feeling towards naturally and also that is why I choose to do Rock music, not only to make a divide between us but also because of like, Kaiser Chiefs and Foo Fighter

After another minute of him sorting out his hair as I had yet again fallen over his eyes, he resumes “Back to the present, the new album ‘legion’ will be having a more sombre tone for my album, due to my practice and studying from my time in ‘Uni’ and I took this root because then you really listen to the music and the lyrics and everything that actually takes to make ‘really solid’ music” his rock side coming out “Some may say that this is Soft Rock and I have changed forever but there are still a few Hard Rock songs for those that want to head bang until they are unconscious “His smile widening even more at the idea but quickly butts into his own talking “Also Franz Ferdinand, sorry… forgot about them!” referring back to who inspired him with a sheepish smile

“The Future?” a confused look on his face appeared instantly “How would I know what is in the future, I could become ‘old news’ and a new ‘Tomos’ could spring out of Aberdeen and take all the ‘lime light’ but … that wouldn’t be all bad” He explains “Like I said, I didn’t want to be famous or successful in the music business and doing it as a job seems to take the fun out of it, as when writing this album, I enjoyed doing it because of the games companies making the games that I love but that is the only reason I did it and keep doing it today” a secret revealed yet still hidden “But that is for the future as you say” he climbs out of the chair he had been sat in to go clean up the mugs, just from this simple action, it shows his humbler side and the true nature of Tomos Jones, the champion of Rock

Double Page Spread

Starting on the DPS, I firstly inserted my entire article, having it as the standard font and only having one drop capital, adding two more so that there was one per column,

Adding in the title for the article, I debated to have it across both pages and keep it on the page the article, going with the title going across the pages
Changing the font of the title to the same as my masthead to keep with brand style, adding in the kicker, putting a drop cap for the kicker, taking inspiration from Q, taking inspiration from Q again by having the borders on the edge of the of the page, adding to the bottom and making is thin so that it didn't take away from the DPS, placing in a pull quote and caption

Contents

Starting with a rough template of my draft contents page, having construction with boxes on where my magazine content would be

Putting my masthead, photo and editor notes along with the web address at the bottom, taking inspiration from Kerrang for  the editors note, having a similar style and tone to the way it is written, later adding in the actual text of contents, having the same font as my masthead so that represented the brand

Adding the contents, I found that I felt it was too clustered and compact, flipping it so that the picture and editors note was at the top and the contents at the bottom, having less dead space

Front cover

Starting with the front cover of my music magazine, I created my masthead in Photoshop taking around thirty minutes to find a text that worked with the style of my magazine

Using the draft front cover as a template, I move my Masthead from Photoshop to InDesign and placing the sell lines, pug and slogan in

Changing the colour scheme from a bright orange and text from light colour scheme to a dark colour scheme with red text and black strokes to make the magazine have more of a Rock style to it

After adding in the photo of my artist, I saw that rather than working my artist around the sell lines, the sell lines would have to work around the artist as some where over lapping.

But the clothing of my artist seemed more indie than rock and so I change it but having him in a black jacket,
making the sell lines smaller along with changing the footbars, changing the colour scheme again so that it applied to the eye better.
I latter decide to keep the background in as it was a hassle to remove all of the grey and plus it made the front cover less bland by having it not pure white, also adding the rest of my sell lines with a barcode
